The Castle of Chios

The Castle of Chios, to the north of the center of Chios, remains impressive since the Hellenistic times onwards. The castle walls are divided into land and seaside, forming an irregular pentagon where strong bastions dominate along the walls.

The Ottoman bath dates back to the 18th century and is the largest hammam of the Castle. The building covers an area of 365 square meters and consists of ten rooms. In the middle of the large warm space, under the imposing dome, lies the marble bench of the massage.

The Chios Mastic Museum is located in south Chios, the only part of the Mediterranean where the Pistacia lentiscus var Chia is cultivated. This is the tree from which mastiha is produced. The museum highlights the history of the cultivation and processing of mastic trees, which is a unique product for Chios. The Nea Moni of Chios is an old historical monastery, founded in 1042 AD. and is known worldwide for its exceptional mosaic art. During the period of its peak in the 14th century, it had a population about a thousand monks. In 1990, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
